About Farm

Farm Name

Argiano SRL Società Agricola

Year of foundation

Siena, Tuscany

Farm area/size of the organisation:

125 ha

Number of workers:

36 workers

Farm main activity:

Vineyards, Olives

Climate and soil characteristics

Mediterranean hilly climate, with coastal influences. Hot summers and mild winters.

Measure Information

Description of the measure

To apply kaolin in June and July, before hot periods, and zeolite before grape harvest.

The kaolin, white coloured, reflects sun rays and keep the leaves colder. Additionally, it absorbs humidity and protects the leaves from insects. It also decreases the evapotranspiration of the leaves.

Instead, zeolite is used for its property of absorbing humidity.

Mycorrhiza support roots in water absorption.

Objective of the measure

To protect leaves and grapes from sunburns and from high humidity, in order to guarantee high-quality grapes.

Justification of the choice

The measure is justified by the sunburns of the grapes and of the leaves and the following oxidation of grapes before harvesting, which decrease the quality.

Where did You get information of the measure from?

From the experiences and the curiosity of the agronomist in charge of the management of the farm.

Description of the situation before the measure implementation

Natural adjuvants and mycorrhiza were not used.

Implementation phase

Materials used

In addition to the tools used previously, a new electrostatic nebulizer is being used, so that the products are better applied with no dispersions.

Costs for the implementation

The cost of kaolin is low; zeolite is a little bit more expensive, but its cost is not prohibitive.

Recommended knowledge / skills / training / courses / education desired before starting the measure implementation

Knowledge is created mainly through field experience and trying different quantities and times of application.

The costs of these treatments are balanced by avoiding chemical treatments. Overall, costs are slightly lower.
The products used are inert and have no limitations. They strengthen the plants and protect them from insects.
Increased trust and awareness from the farmers and other workers of the farm; practicing an “healthy” farming contributes to build a better future for the new generations.

Innovation elements

The electrostatic nebulizer avoids dispersions of the products applied. Rows are treated alternatively, so that fuel and soil compaction are halved.

Key element for success

To directly experiment in the field methods and quantities to apply.

Physical constraints

Above 5/10 kg of products should not be applied to not obstruct the nozzles.

Acceptance constraints

The white color of the kaolin might cause some acceptance problem at the beginning, but once understood the reason it is easily accepted.

Lesson learned

Farmers’ experiences

The experience of the farmer is fundamental to improve the technique.

Also, the timely treatment is fundamental to succeed with organic farming.

“Organic agriculture is not simply applying a single treatment, but it is a set of small measures that contribute together; if one is not working, the others would replace it”.

“Organic viticulture does not mean replacing chemical treatments with copper and sulfur; those who do that simply fail”.

Measure sustainability

Environmental sustainability

The use of the fuel is comparable to the previous management. The products are environmentally friendly without any downside, differently from chemical pesticides.

Economical sustainability

Overall, the costs decreased; therefore, the measure is economically sustainable.

Transfer of the measure

Replicability conditions required

Once understood why and how to apply this measure, it is very easy to replicate it.

Certainly, training and dissemination are always needed.

Conclusion remarks

The utilization of natural adjuvants like kaolin and zeolite, as well as the utilization of mycorrhiza, contribute to keep the vines healthy and, hence, to a more efficient use of the water resource.

Future plans

To use always more these products.

Open problems

To optimize the application of this technique.
