The farmer built 3 cascade-connected pools and a 1.5 ha wetland on his land. Water retention in the agricultural landscape also helps the tree plantations bordering his property – the average size of the land blocks is between 2 and 5 ha. As part of the land consolidation, the farmer has even actively promoted the restoration of historical paths and the construction of bio-corridors. In cooperation with the nearby town of Manětín, he planted 2.5 km of tree alleys.

Objective of the measure

The objectives of the measures were to retain water in the agricultural landscape and provide habitat for native animal species, especially the rare bird species.

Justification of the choice

The farmer chose the measure because of the suitable conditions on the site and his interest in ornithology.

Ponds and wetlands are a backup source of water for farmers.
Along with the return of water, rare animals such as the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), European fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) and the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) have also returned to the landscape. Shorebirds of suborder Charadrii rest on the wetland during their migration period and common crane (Grus grus) nests here.
The measures built and the return of native fauna to the landscape also have an educational character. The farmer and his wife organize bird ringing every year, thus helping to raise awareness among the public.

Innovation elements

The innovative element is mainly the connection of the water retention function with conservation activities with a focus on ornithology.

Key element for success

A key element of success was the increase of biodiversity and water availability on site.

Physical constraints

Unstable subsoil with peat caused problems when excavating the pools.

Acceptance constraints

Hunting public negative attitudes partly hindered the adoption of the measure.
