About Farm

Farm Name

Troyli

Year of foundation

Around 1953

Location

Matera, Basilicata

Farm area/size of the organisation:

Large (> 100 ha)

Number of workers:

5 – 20

Farm main activity:

Mixed farming

Climate and soil characteristics

Mediterranean climate with deep and well sorted soils

Measure Information

Description of the measure

Storage reservoirs filled with groundwater. Wells are in an alluvial riparian aquifer with around 20 m of maximum depth.

The reservoirs are at around 80 m and 150 m over the riverbed (river Acri).

Water is always present in the aquifer, but pumping rates should be moderate Drip irrigation with double dripline.

Objective of the measure

Emergency water supply.

Justification of the choice

Supply water when the irrigation consortium is not supplying water due to scarcity conditions

Where did You get information of the measure from?

Development of the idea after a University thesis. Technology proposed by NETAFIM producer after visiting the farm.

Description of the situation before the measure implementation

Reservoirs were built after the drought of the 90s in the region.

Implementation phase

Description of the survey done for the implementation

Reservoirs are built in the central area of the farm. The first reservoir is sending water to fields by pumping, the second one by gravity. The irrigation system is almost totally by drip irrigation.

Materials used

PVC film

Costs for the implementation

Roughly 20000 euros for a reservoir of 3000 cubic meters

Implementation / building

Reservoir height is half excavated and half built outside terrain with the excavated material, for a total depth of 4. Side slope is 1:1.

Required maintenance operations

Standard maintenance

Recommended knowledge / skills / training / courses / education desired before starting the measure implementation

No specific skill required. An expert agronomist has the needed expertise

Impacts

Possible to stabilize crop production since the allowed irrigation even if water supply is interrupted due to problems
High costs

Innovation

Key element for success

Proper calculation of water demand to have an accurate sizing of the reservoirs.

Use drip irrigation to save water.

Constraints

Acceptance constraints

Carry out the legal procedures to excavate reservoirs (including landscape regulation)

Lesson learned

Farmers’ experiences

“We are dealing really well with the measure”

Testimonies

“The measure should be considered only as emergency measure, when the irrigation district is supplying water, we use that one”

Measure sustainability

Environmental sustainability

The measure allowed to pump water in a long time and to supply it afterwards, due to this use of pumping and of energy.

Economical sustainability

The measure allowed to pump water in a long time and to supply it afterwards, due to this cost of pumping and of fuel are reduced.

Transfer of the measure

Replicability conditions required

No specific conditions apart from a water supply like a river or a well to be used in a sustainable way, close to the farm.

Conclusion remarks

Future plans

Constant innovation will be needed to further water saving.
