Soil characterized by limestone bedrock.

Measure Information

Description of the measure

An old well was restored and deepened; moreovera wind pump was installed in the pasture. The water is pumped into a tank above the ground from which waterer bowls with float valves for grazing animals are supplied. In addition, the farm’s hydrological conditions have been improved through the planting of nearby wood and permanent grassland.

Objective of the measure

The aim of the measure was to provide water to the animals directly at the place of grazing without the need to import it from a more distant location.

Justification of the choice

A wind pump was chosen to provide a source of energy for pumping water from the well due to the long distance to an available source of electricity. The measure was also chosen because of its low acquisition cost and a relatively easy installation.

Where did You get information of the measure from?

The author obtained the information from the wind pump supplier, Pavel Floriš. During the measure implementation he also drew on his own long experience.

Description of the situation before the measure implementation

Prior to the construction of the wind pump watering place, water for the animals had to be delivered in a tanker, which represented a considerable cost and was highly time demanding. The site was characterized by poor hydrological conditions caused by inappropriate management practices.

Stakeholders involved

Wind pump supplier, Pavel Floriš.

Description of stakeholders’ role

Technical and information support, partial supply of materials.

Implementation phase

Materials used

  • Excavator,
  • concrete ring with a lid,
  • tongs for ring transport,
  • wind pump,
  • special type of gravel (very small pebbles),
  • clay.

Costs for the implementation

The total cost was about CZK 70 000 (approx. 2800 EUR) for the material plus the cost for the work.

Implementation / building

A drill hole in the place of the old well was dug, which was afterwards deepened to a depth of 4 meters; a concrete ring with a lid and a wind pump were installed. The bottom of the well and the backfill of the concrete ring were covered with washed gravel, two layers of geotextile were applied around the outside of the ring and the top was covered with compacted clay.

Required maintenance operations

In terms of maintenance a daily cleanliness and functionality check of the waterers are sufficient.

Recommended knowledge / skills / training / courses / education desired before starting the measure implementation

For implementation a basic knowledge of machine operation is required.

Thanks to the water distribution system, there is no need to transport the water from a distant area; hence, the measure saves money and time.
The change in hydrological conditions after the planting of woodland and permanent grassland ensure that there is always water in the well. Furthermore, the pastures provide sufficient feed for the animals.

Innovation elements

Wind pumps and waterer bowls with float valves are innovative elements, especially in the Czech Republic in which they are rarely used.

Key element for success

Knowledge of local conditions, openness to unconventional new solutions.

Physical constraints

Inability to pump water during long windless periods.

Technological constraints

The facility can only be used from spring to autumn.

Proposed solutions to above constraints

In case of prolonged windless periods, it is necessary to pump the water with a so called “rescue aggregate”, i.e. a trolley with a petrol aggregate and a sludge pump which is used for water handling in horticulture.

Lesson learned

Farmers’ experiences

The farmer has an excellent experience with the measure. Compared to the previous necessity of bringing water to the pasture in tankers, he particularly appreciates the reduced fuel consumption and transport time. Other advantages are the low maintenance requirements and the simplicity of the measure.

“Let the wind blow and the water flow!”

Measure sustainability

Environmental sustainability

The use of mainly renewable energy sources, i.e. the pump powered by wind, ensures the environmental sustainability of the measure.

Economical sustainability

Low acquisition costs and almost zero maintenance costs ensure the economic sustainability of the measures.

Transfer of the measure

Replicability conditions required

  • Windy area;
  • need of underground water source on the property;
  • openness to unconventional solutions.

Additional Required Conditions for spreading the measure

Education, informing the public about this possibility. Passing on the experience to the younger generation.

Conclusion remarks

The measure is an economically and environmentally sustainable innovative solution for water supply to grazing livestock that saves farmer´s time and money.

Future plans

In the future, the farmer is preparing a power plant project to power the greenhouse, drying room and freezer box. With this power plant, the farm should be energy independent for most of the year. In fact, the farmer sees a change in the whole structure of agricultural production as necessary tool for a general improvement in the current agricultural and environmental state.
